Description
A Glenburgie of an 11 year old chosen by Alba Import, distilled in 2010, at 46%. Glenburgie is a Speyside single malt, owned by Chivas Brothers and one of the larger Speyside distilleries. It was founded in 1810 as Kilnflat by William Paul, taking the Glenburgie name in 1878. The old distillery was demolished and rebuilt in 2004, only the little stone office left standing. It has been a core malt of the Ballantine's blend since Hiram Walker bought it in 1936.
Worked unhurried through the stillhouse, for a light body with a gentle, waxy edge. It was matured in an Oloroso cask, the wood working into the fruity malt. In integration coconut and vanilla knit with the malt, the apple softening towards a waxy honey. Years in oak deepen the spirit to old gold, the body growing rounder and waxier with time. A soft waxiness from the spirit carries a thread through the maturation.
At 46% it is bright, waxy and soft. Baked apple, grass and a light honey, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. A light orchard fruit and a soft spice give it shape. A fresh finish closes on apple and a soft oak. This is Glenburgie's bright, orchard led Speyside character.
