House of McCallum bottled this Glenburgie, an 11 year old, distilled in 2008, from cask 99 & 100, at 46.5%, one of 781 bottles. Glenburgie is a Speyside single malt made near Alves in Moray, east of Forres. It was rebuilt in 1881 by Charles Chree Doig, the architect behind so many Speyside stillhouses. Most of its make goes quietly to blends; single malt Glenburgie is rare, and largely from independents. It was founded in 1810 as Kilnflat by William Paul, taking the Glenburgie name in 1878.

It was taken gently through wash and spirit stills, for the light, fruity make the Ballantine's blenders prized. Ex-Bourbon casks held it, the American oak lending vanilla and a light honey. In integration coconut and vanilla knit with the malt, the apple softening towards a waxy honey. Maturation runs slow and even in the cool Speyside warehouses. Years in oak deepen the spirit to old gold, the body growing rounder and waxier with time.

Bottled at 46.5%, it is light and rounded. Pear, honey and a creamy oak, with a gentle oak sweetness. Pear, grass and a creamy oak fill the middle. Green apple, honey and a soft oak see it out. This is a fragrant Speyside single malt of real lightness.
