Description
This GlenAllachie was bottled by Ian Macleod, a 10 year old, distilled in 2006, from cask 92712, at 43%, one of 329 bottles. GlenAllachie is a Speyside single malt from the hills above Aberlour, below Ben Rinnes. It was designed almost entirely gravity fed, an efficient plant for its time. It was founded in 1967, designed by the architect William Delme Evans, his fourth distillery after Jura and Tullibardine. It was built by Mackinlay McPherson, the firm that supplied whisky to Shackleton's 1907 expedition.
It was distilled in copper pot stills, giving a full bodied Speyside spirit. A Red Wine cask held it, drawing the rich spirit on over the years. By the integrating teens the raw notes fade and esters build, the rich spirit growing rounder and darker. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and a soft coconut over the fruit.
Bottled at 43%, it is rounded and full. A rich orchard sweetness and dark sugar, with red berry and a dry spice from the cask. Beneath it run dried fruit, dark sugar and a warm spice. The close is rich and dark, fruit over a warm spice. This is a Speyside single malt of real standing.
