Description
A 15 year old Glen Spey from Cadenhead, distilled in 1981, at 62.2%. Glen Spey is a Speyside single malt whose purifier stills give a light, grassy spirit. It is one of five distilleries in the whisky town of Rothes, in the heart of Speyside. Most of its spirit goes to blends; single malt Glen Spey is rare, and largely the work of independents. It was founded in 1878 by the grain merchant James Stuart, who added stills to an old oatmeal mill.
It was taken gently through wash and spirit stills, for a fine, clean malt the blenders have long prized. First fill bourbon gave a fuller vanilla and a hint of coconut from the lactones. Into oxidative maturity, slow air builds fruity esters of apple and a light tropical note over a nutty depth. The lantern stills set a light, fresh tone that the oak then slowly deepens. Long ageing turns the green, herbal edge towards orchard fruit, honey and a gentle spice.
Bottled at a cask strength 62.2%, it is concentrated. A delicate, fruity malt with a waxy edge, with a light oak sweetness. Beneath it run fresh grass, light fruit and a nutty malt. A fresh finish closes on a nutty malt and a soft oak. This is Glen Spey's clean, nutty Speyside character.
