Description
Sexywhisky bottled this Glen Spey, a 12 year old, distilled in 2010, at 58.1%, one of 30 bottles. Glen Spey is a Speyside single malt from Rothes, founded in 1878 as the Mill of Rothes. When the firm merged with Justerini and Brooks, Glen Spey became a key malt in the J and B blend.
The spirit was distilled from unpeated malt, shaping a light body with a soft, waxy edge. An Oloroso cask held it, drawing the light spirit deeper over the years. Through integration the spirit and wood marry, vanillin rounding out as esters lend a riper orchard fruit over the nutty malt. Active wood frames the fruit without ever crowding the delicate Speyside spirit. Long ageing turns the green, herbal edge towards orchard fruit, honey and a gentle spice. Built for the blender's art, the light make ages with quiet grace as a single malt.
At its natural 58.1% it is rich and grassy. Fresh cut grass, green apple and a nutty malt, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. It is grassy and gently nutty, the delicate spirit shining through. The close is light and clean, grass over a gentle oak. This is a light, nutty Speyside single malt.
