Description
The Vintage Malt Whisky Company bottled this Glen Spey, an 11 year old, distilled in 2011, from cask 802834, at 53%, one of 318 bottles. Glen Spey is a Speyside single malt, owned by the London gin house Gilbey from 1887. It is one of five distilleries in the whisky town of Rothes, in the heart of Speyside. Its stills were doubled from two to four in the 1970 expansion, the make still light and grassy.
Taken gently through wash and spirit stills, shaping a light body with a soft, waxy edge. Finished in a Marsala cask, the wood building on the light spirit. Through integration the spirit and wood marry, vanillin rounding out as esters lend a riper orchard fruit over the nutty malt. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and a soft coconut over the fruit. Because the purifiers keep the spirit light, the cask shows clearly through the years.
At its natural 53% it is rich and grassy. A delicate, fruity malt with a waxy edge, with a raisined, herbal sweetness from the cask. A green apple and a gentle spice lift the middle. The finish is light, grassy and clean. This is Glen Spey's clean, nutty Speyside character.
