Description
A Glen Spey of an 11 year old chosen by van Wees, distilled in 2011, from cask 802470, at 46%. Glen Spey is a light, fragrant Speyside malt of fresh grass and a nutty malt. Under Gilbey it took the Glen Spey name and supplied the house Spey Royal blend. Its stills carry purifiers, which raise the reflux and return the heavier vapours for a lighter, cleaner spirit. When the firm merged with Justerini and Brooks, Glen Spey became a key malt in the J and B blend.
Taken gently through wash and spirit stills, shaping a light body with a soft, waxy edge. First fill bourbon gave a fuller vanilla and a hint of coconut from the lactones. In integration coconut and vanilla knit with the malt, the hay softening towards a nutty honey. Years in oak round the spirit, the fresh notes deepening towards a nutty honey and orchard fruit. Maturation in the racked warehouses is slow and even, the Speyside air cool and steady.
Bottled at 46%, it is light and rounded. Fresh grass, pear and a creamy almond, over a gentle, creamy oak. Soft meadow grass and a nutty malt sit behind the cask. The finish is light, grassy and clean. This is the delicate, grassy malt of Rothes.
