Description
This Glen Spey was bottled by Berry Bros and Rudd, a 10 year old, distilled in 2009, from cask 804620, at 57.2%. Glen Spey is a light, fragrant Speyside malt of fresh grass and a nutty malt. Most of its spirit goes to blends; single malt Glen Spey is rare, and largely the work of independents. James Stuart held the licence to Macallan at the time, and bought that distillery outright in 1886.
Worked unhurried through the stillhouse, the purifiers paring it back to a light, grassy core. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, the oak quiet behind the fresh spirit. In integration coconut and vanilla knit with the malt, the hay softening towards a nutty honey. The lantern stills set a light, fresh tone that the oak then slowly deepens. Long ageing turns the green, herbal edge towards orchard fruit, honey and a gentle spice. Built for the blender's art, the light make ages with quiet grace as a single malt.
At a hearty 57.2% it carries real weight. Pear, cereal and a green, grassy lift, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The mouthfeel is light, a faint waxiness carrying the fruit. The finish is light, grassy and clean. This is a grassy Speyside malt of real delicacy.
