Description
Glen Scotia from the distillery, a 14 year old, from 2005, cask 17/413-2, at 56.1%, 299 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt, one of only three distilleries left in the old whisky capital. It sits on High Street in Campbeltown, on the Kintyre peninsula on the west coast.
It was drawn off the stills after a long ferment for a fruity, briny spirit, for a briny, oily make of salt, citrus and a salted toffee. Maturation came in a Tawny Port cask, layered over the briny Glen Scotia make. In integration lactones (coconut) and vanillin (vanilla) knit with the spirit, the brine deepening over a salted toffee. A long ferment gives a fruity make that ages with a coastal, oily grace. The slow distillation and shell and tube condensers give the oily Glen Scotia body. It was founded in 1832 as Scotia, one of the survivors of Campbeltown's Victorian whisky boom.
At its natural 56.1% it is concentrated. Salt, citrus and a soft toffee, with a nutty, raisined red fruit from the cask. A baked apple and a sea salt lift it. A briny finish ends on citrus and a soft oak. This is one of the last three Campbeltown malts.
