Description
An official release of Glen Scotia, a 26 year old, from 1991, cask 656, at 54.3%, 153 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt, one of only three distilleries left in the old whisky capital. It runs a single pair of stills and shell and tube condensers for a slow, oily make.
The spirit was made on Crosshill Loch water in the heart of Campbeltown, building the Campbeltown Glen Scotia style. First fill bourbon gave a fuller vanilla and a touch of coconut from the lactones. Through the evaporative decades the spirit concentrates, esters folding into dried fruit, beeswax and a salted oil. The maritime setting on the Kintyre coast threads salt and brine through the spirit. A long ferment gives a fruity make that ages with a coastal, oily grace. Crosshill Loch water and a long ferment give the oily, coastal Glen Scotia make. Its malt comes from Greencore Maltings in southwest Scotland.
At 54.3%, undiluted, it is deep and briny. Sea salt, citrus and a salted toffee, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The mouthfeel is oily, the fruit carried on a briny body. The finish runs long, oily and coastal. This is the oily, salted malt of the Wee Toon.
