Description
A 12 year old Glen Scotia, a distillery bottling, from 2007, cask 17/106-8, at 54%, 324 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a coastal Campbeltown malt sitting between heavier Springbank and lighter Glengyle. It has been owned by the Loch Lomond Group since the 1990s, after many changes of hands.
Run through the stills and shell and tube condensers on Crosshill Loch water, building a maritime character of sea salt and oil. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, oak lactones lending vanilla and a little coconut. Through integration spirit and wood marry, vanillin settling into a rounded vanilla as ethyl esters lend a riper citrus and a salted toffee. The slow distillation and shell and tube condensers give the oily Glen Scotia body. Its Victoriana and single cask releases have won the distillery wide acclaim. It was founded in 1832 as Scotia, one of the survivors of Campbeltown's Victorian whisky boom.
At cask strength 54% it is full bodied. A briny, oily coastal fruit, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Citrus, brine and a salted toffee fill the middle. The finish is rounded, salted and oily. This is Glen Scotia's coastal, briny Campbeltown style.
