Description
Glen Scotia from the distillery, a 6 year old, from 2013, cask 144, at 57.8%, 236 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt known for sea salt, oil and a salted toffee. It has been owned by the Loch Lomond Group since the 1990s, after many changes of hands.
The spirit was distilled slowly in a single pair of stills for an oily, coastal make, giving a coastal, briny Campbeltown spirit. A bourbon barrel held it, the wood adding a light vanilla over the brine. In these extractive early years the oak gives vanillin as vanilla and oak lactones as coconut over a briny, oily spirit. The oily, coastal spirit shows the cask clearly, vanilla and brine to the fore. The maritime setting on the Kintyre coast threads salt and brine through the spirit. The Glen was added to the Scotia name around 1930, the distillery dating to 1832. Active wood frames the fruit without overwhelming the briny Campbeltown spirit.
At a hearty 57.8% it carries real weight. An oily, salted sweetness, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A dried fruit and a soft oak give it depth. Citrus, salt and a soft oak see out the finish. This is a Campbeltown single malt of real character.
