Description
An 8 year old Glen Scotia, a distillery bottling, from 2015, cask 23/390-12, at 51.9%, 165 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt made on Crosshill Loch water in the Wee Toon. It runs a single pair of stills and shell and tube condensers for a slow, oily make.
Drawn off the stills after a long ferment for a fruity, briny spirit, for the salty, oily make Glen Scotia is known for. Finished in a Rum cask, the wood building over the oily, coastal spirit. In these extractive early years the oak gives vanillin as vanilla and oak lactones as coconut over a briny, oily spirit. The oily, coastal spirit shows the cask clearly, vanilla and brine to the fore. The Glen was added to the Scotia name around 1930, the distillery dating to 1832. Long ageing turns the fresh citrus towards dried fruit, salted toffee and a soft spice.
At cask strength 51.9% it is full bodied. Citrus, salt and a soft vanilla, with a soft brown sugar and a tropical fruit from the cask. Soft citrus and a salted oil sit behind the cask. Citrus, salt and a soft oak see out the finish. This is Glen Scotia, a survivor of the old whisky capital.
