Description
An official release of Glen Scotia, a 7 year old, from 2017, cask 3786, at 58%, 233 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt from the Loch Lomond Group, salty and oily in style. It runs a single pair of stills and shell and tube condensers for a slow, oily make.
Made on Crosshill Loch water in the heart of Campbeltown, giving a coastal, briny Campbeltown spirit. Ex-Bourbon casks held it, the gentle American oak letting the briny make lead. At an extractive age eugenol lends a clove note and lactones a coconut, the spirit fresh, oily and coastal. Maturation in the Campbeltown warehouses, by the sea, lends a coastal edge. Its long ferment, averaging well over a hundred hours, builds a fruity, coastal character. It has been owned by the Loch Lomond Group since the 1990s, after many changes of hands. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and coconut over the fruit.
At cask strength 58% it is full bodied. Sea salt, citrus and a salted toffee, with a soft vanilla from the oak. It is oily and briny, the coastal spirit shining through. A long, oily finish carries a sea salt and a citrus. This is Glen Scotia, a survivor of the old whisky capital.
