Description
An official release of Glen Scotia, at 56.5%. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt made on Crosshill Loch water in the Wee Toon. It sits on High Street in Campbeltown, on the Kintyre peninsula on the west coast.
The spirit was distilled slowly in a single pair of stills for an oily, coastal make, building the Campbeltown Glen Scotia style. First fill bourbon gave a fuller vanilla and a touch of coconut from the lactones. Carrying no age, soft vanillin (vanilla) and a coastal salt suggest a fair spell in cask. The cool, salt laden Campbeltown air gives a slow, coastal maturation in the warehouses. Long ageing turns the fresh citrus towards dried fruit, salted toffee and a soft spice. Years in oak round the spirit, the brine and citrus deepening to a salted toffee. A former owner, Duncan MacCallum, drowned in the loch that fed the distillery, and is said to haunt it.
At cask strength 56.5% it is full bodied. Baked apple, brine and a creamy oil, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A dried fruit and a soft oak give it depth. The finish is rounded, salted and oily. This is a salty, oily Campbeltown single malt.
