Description
An official release of Glen Scotia, an 8 year old, at 40%. Glen Scotia is a coastal, briny Campbeltown malt, founded in 1832 on the Kintyre peninsula. Its malt comes from Greencore Maltings in southwest Scotland.
Drawn off the stills after a long ferment for a fruity, briny spirit, giving a coastal, briny Campbeltown spirit. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, a soft vanilla beneath the coastal spirit. At an extractive age eugenol lends a clove note and lactones a coconut, the spirit fresh, oily and coastal. Active wood frames the fruit without overwhelming the briny Campbeltown spirit. It has been owned by the Loch Lomond Group since the 1990s, after many changes of hands. It is one of only three working distilleries left in Campbeltown, with Springbank and Glengyle. The maritime setting on the Kintyre coast threads salt and brine through the spirit. Long ageing turns the fresh citrus towards dried fruit, salted toffee and a soft spice.
Reduced to 40%, it is mellow. An oily, salted sweetness, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Beneath it run citrus, salt and a soft oil. The finish is long, oily and salted. This is one of the last three Campbeltown malts.
