Description
From the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, an 8 year old Glen Scotia, distilled in 2014, from cask 93.201, bottled at 61.5%, one of 215 bottles. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt, one of only three distilleries left in the old whisky capital. It is one of only three working distilleries left in Campbeltown, with Springbank and Glengyle.
The spirit was worked through the stills for an oily, coastal make, for an oily spirit with a coastal, salted edge. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, oak lactones lending vanilla and a little coconut. Young and extractive, the cask sheds vanillin (vanilla) and toasted sugars (light caramel) over the salty make. The slow distillation and shell and tube condensers give the oily Glen Scotia body. Its long ferment, averaging well over a hundred hours, builds a fruity, coastal character. A gentle maturation suits the oily make, the sea salt and toffee growing with time.
At a hearty 61.5% it carries real weight. An oily, salted sweetness, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Citrus, brine and a salted toffee fill the middle. The finish is long, oily and salted. This is a Campbeltown single malt of real character.
