Description
This Glen Scotia was bottled by Ian Macleod, a 31 year old, distilled in 1975, from cask 2191, bottled at 51.4%, one of 144 bottles. Glen Scotia is a coastal Campbeltown malt sitting between heavier Springbank and lighter Glengyle. Its Victoriana and single cask releases have won the distillery wide acclaim.
Distilled slowly in a single pair of stills for an oily, coastal make, giving a coastal, briny Campbeltown spirit. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, the oak quiet behind the oily spirit. At a great, fragile age oxidation rules, sotolon lending maple and dried fig as beeswax and a salted oil linger. Crosshill Loch water and a long ferment give the oily, coastal Glen Scotia make. Its long ferment, averaging well over a hundred hours, builds a fruity, coastal character. It is one of only three working distilleries left in Campbeltown, with Springbank and Glengyle.
At cask strength 51.4% it is full bodied. Sea salt, citrus and a salted toffee, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The texture is oily and coating, the fruit lifted by vanilla. It finishes long, briny and oily. This is the oily, salted malt of the Wee Toon.
