Description
A Glen Scotia of a 30 year old chosen by the Glasgow bottler Hunter Laing, distilled in 1991, bottled at 59.6%, one of 152 bottles. Glen Scotia is a maritime Campbeltown malt, one of the last three of a town that once held thirty. Its water is drawn from Crosshill Loch above the town.
The spirit was worked through the stills for an oily, coastal make, building the Campbeltown Glen Scotia style. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, vanillin lending vanilla under the salt and oil. Ethereal and fragile, decades draw the oily malt to a waxy, briny delicacy of sotolon, dried fruit and old oak. Active wood frames the fruit without overwhelming the briny Campbeltown spirit. The Campbeltown style is oily and salted, the cask deepening it over the years. The maritime setting on the Kintyre coast threads salt and brine through the spirit. Its malt comes from Greencore Maltings in southwest Scotland.
Bottled at a cask strength 59.6%, it is rich. Salt, citrus and a soft toffee, with a soft vanilla from the oak. It is oily and briny, the coastal spirit shining through. A briny finish ends on citrus and a soft oak. This is Glen Scotia, a survivor of the old whisky capital.
