Description
A 30 year old Glen Scotia from the bottler Ian Macleod, distilled in 1974, from cask 993, bottled at 41.2%, one of 192 bottles. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt from the Loch Lomond Group, salty and oily in style. A former owner, Duncan MacCallum, drowned in the loch that fed the distillery, and is said to haunt it.
It was run through the stills and shell and tube condensers on Crosshill Loch water, for an oily spirit with a coastal, salted edge. A Rum cask held it, shaping the coastal spirit over the years. At a great, fragile age oxidation rules, sotolon lending maple and dried fig as beeswax and a salted oil linger. The maritime setting on the Kintyre coast threads salt and brine through the spirit. Refill oak lets the salty, oily Glen Scotia character lead the way. Crosshill Loch water and a long ferment give the oily, coastal Glen Scotia make.
At a hearty 41.2% it carries real weight. Salt, citrus and a soft toffee, with a soft brown sugar and a tropical fruit from the cask. The texture is oily and coating, the fruit lifted by vanilla. The close is oily and salted, fruit over a gentle oak. This is an oily, coastal malt from the Kintyre coast.
