Description
Glen Scotia from the distillery, a 25 year old, at 48.8%. Glen Scotia is a salty, oily Campbeltown malt from the west coast of Scotland. It runs a single pair of stills and shell and tube condensers for a slow, oily make.
The spirit was distilled slow for the salty, oily Glen Scotia style, giving a coastal, briny Campbeltown spirit. First fill bourbon gave a fuller vanilla and a touch of coconut from the lactones. Through the evaporative decades the spirit concentrates, esters folding into dried fruit, beeswax and a salted oil. Refill oak lets the salty, oily Glen Scotia character lead the way. A gentle maturation suits the oily make, the sea salt and toffee growing with time. A former owner, Duncan MacCallum, drowned in the loch that fed the distillery, and is said to haunt it. The Glen was added to the Scotia name around 1930, the distillery dating to 1832.
At a hearty 48.8% it carries real weight. Baked apple, brine and a creamy oil, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A dried fruit and a soft oak give it depth. The finish is long, oily and salted. This is Glen Scotia, a survivor of the old whisky capital.
