Description
A 25 year old Glen Scotia from the Campbeltown house Cadenhead, distilled in 1992, bottled at 44%, one of 186 bottles. Glen Scotia is a coastal Campbeltown malt sitting between heavier Springbank and lighter Glengyle. Its malt comes from Greencore Maltings in southwest Scotland.
Distilled slow for the salty, oily Glen Scotia style, for the salty, oily make Glen Scotia is known for. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, oak lactones lending vanilla and a little coconut. At this evaporative stage ellagitannins lend a drying structure while oxidation builds a richer, briny fruit. The slow distillation and shell and tube condensers give the oily Glen Scotia body. Campbeltown, the Wee Toon, once held some thirty distilleries and was the whisky capital of the world. It sits on High Street in Campbeltown, on the Kintyre peninsula on the west coast. It was founded in 1832 as Scotia, one of the survivors of Campbeltown's Victorian whisky boom.
Reduced to 44%, it is mellow. Sea salt, oil and a salted toffee, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The mouthfeel is oily, the fruit carried on a briny body. The finish is long, oily and salted. This is the oily, salted malt of the Wee Toon.
