Description
From the Pitlochry bottler Signatory Vintage, a 24 year old Glen Scotia, distilled in 1991, from cask 1051, bottled at 43%. Glen Scotia is a maritime Campbeltown malt, one of the last three of a town that once held thirty. Its long ferment, averaging well over a hundred hours, builds a fruity, coastal character.
It was made on Crosshill Loch water in the heart of Campbeltown, for the salty, oily make Glen Scotia is known for. First fill bourbon gave a fuller vanilla and a touch of coconut from the lactones. At this evaporative stage ellagitannins lend a drying structure while oxidation builds a richer, briny fruit. The cool, salt laden Campbeltown air gives a slow, coastal maturation in the warehouses. It sits on High Street in Campbeltown, on the Kintyre peninsula on the west coast. It has been owned by the Loch Lomond Group since the 1990s, after many changes of hands.
Bottled at 43%, it is rounded. Citrus, salt and a soft vanilla, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The mouthfeel is oily, the fruit carried on a briny body. Citrus, salt and a soft oak see out the finish. This is a salty, oily Campbeltown single malt.
