Description
Glen Scotia from the distillery, a 22 year old, at 47%. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt from the Loch Lomond Group, salty and oily in style. It has been owned by the Loch Lomond Group since the 1990s, after many changes of hands.
Worked through the stills for an oily, coastal make, giving a coastal, briny Campbeltown spirit. A refill bourbon hogshead held it, keeping the salty, oily character to the fore. Through the evaporative decades the spirit concentrates, esters folding into dried fruit, beeswax and a salted oil. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and coconut over the fruit. Its long ferment, averaging well over a hundred hours, builds a fruity, coastal character. It is one of only three working distilleries left in Campbeltown, with Springbank and Glengyle. Campbeltown, the Wee Toon, once held some thirty distilleries and was the whisky capital of the world.
Bottled at a cask strength 47%, it is rich. Baked apple, brine and a creamy oil, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Beneath it run citrus, salt and a soft oil. It finishes long, briny and oily. This is a maritime Campbeltown single malt.
