Description
This Glen Scotia was bottled by Edition Spirits, a 22 year old, distilled in 1991, bottled at 59.6%, one of 219 bottles. Glen Scotia, founded in 1832, is one of the three surviving Campbeltown distilleries. It runs a single pair of stills and shell and tube condensers for a slow, oily make.
The spirit was run through the stills and shell and tube condensers on Crosshill Loch water, building a maritime character of sea salt and oil. A bourbon barrel held it, the wood adding a light vanilla over the brine. Through the evaporative decades the spirit concentrates, esters folding into dried fruit, beeswax and a salted oil. Maturation in the Campbeltown warehouses, by the sea, lends a coastal edge. Its long ferment, averaging well over a hundred hours, builds a fruity, coastal character. The maritime setting on the Kintyre coast threads salt and brine through the spirit.
At cask strength 59.6% it is full bodied. Sea salt, oil and a salted toffee, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The mouthfeel is oily, the fruit carried on a briny body. The finish is rounded, salted and oily. This is one of the last three Campbeltown malts.
