Description
An official release of Glen Scotia, a 21 year old, at 46%, 2500 bottles in all. Glen Scotia, founded in 1832, is one of the three surviving Campbeltown distilleries. It is one of only three working distilleries left in Campbeltown, with Springbank and Glengyle.
It was worked through the stills for an oily, coastal make, for an oily spirit with a coastal, salted edge. It was matured in an Oloroso cask, the wood working into the oily malt. At oxidative maturity aldehydes lend a nutty edge while ellagitannins add a gentle, drying grip over the oil. The cool, salt laden Campbeltown air gives a slow, coastal maturation in the warehouses. Its water is drawn from Crosshill Loch above the town. Its Victoriana and single cask releases have won the distillery wide acclaim. It has been owned by the Loch Lomond Group since the 1990s, after many changes of hands.
At 46% it is smooth and oily. Salt, citrus and a soft toffee, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. The mouthfeel is oily, the fruit carried on a briny body. A briny finish ends on citrus and a soft oak. This is a Campbeltown single malt of real character.
