Glen Scotia 17 Years Old 1992 Cask #3 (Samaroli)

The bottler Samaroli bottled this Glen Scotia, a 17 year old, distilled in 1992, from cask 3, bottled at 45%, one of 858 bottles. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt from a town once called the whisky capital of the world. It is one of only three working distilleries left in Campbeltown, with Springbank and Glengyle.

The spirit was run through the stills and shell and tube condensers on Crosshill Loch water, for an oily spirit with a coastal, salted edge. It was matured in a Fino cask, the wood working into the oily malt. At oxidative maturity aldehydes lend a nutty edge while ellagitannins add a gentle, drying grip over the oil. Years in oak round the spirit, the brine and citrus deepening to a salted toffee. The Campbeltown style is oily and salted, the cask deepening it over the years. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and coconut over the fruit.

Reduced to 45%, it is mellow. A coastal, oily sweetness, with a dry, bready, almond note from the cask. The texture is oily and coating, the fruit lifted by vanilla. The close is oily and salted, fruit over a gentle oak. This is an oily, coastal malt from the Kintyre coast.
