Description
A Glen Moray of a 31 year old chosen by the London house Berry Bros and Rudd, distilled in 1991, from cask 7837, bottled at 55.7%, one of 264 bottles. Glen Moray is a Speyside single malt from Elgin, known for its light, fruity and accessible style. It was built on Gallow Hill at Elgin, the old site of the town's hangings.
Distilled from unpeated malt in copper pot stills, for a light, easy spirit with a soft malt. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, vanillin lending vanilla under the apple. Ethereal and fragile, decades draw the light malt to a honeyed, waxy delicacy of sotolon, dried fruit and old oak. Years in oak round the spirit, the green apple deepening to honey and dried fruit. It was a pioneer of wine cask finishing, working with Chardonnay casks back in the 1990s. Its water is drawn from the River Lossie, which runs past the distillery at Elgin. It closed in 1910 and reopened in 1923 under Macdonald and Muir of Glenmorangie.
At cask strength 55.7% it is full bodied. A light, orchard fruit and toffee, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Soft orchard fruit and a creamy vanilla sit behind the cask. The finish is long, fruity and clean. This is the easy, fruity malt of Elgin.
