Description
From the bottler Whisky.de, a 17 year old Glen Moray, distilled in 2008, bottled at 46%, one of 286 bottles. Glen Moray is a Speyside single malt known for vanilla, honey and orchard fruit. It was built on Gallow Hill at Elgin, the old site of the town's hangings.
It was distilled from unpeated malt in copper pot stills, giving a clean, sweet Speyside spirit. An Oloroso cask shaped the finish, over the fruity Glen Moray spirit. Into oxidative maturity, slow air ingress builds fruity ethyl esters (apple and pear) and a honeyed depth. A pioneer of wine cask finishing, Glen Moray has long layered fruit over its light malt. The light, fruity make takes cask flavour well while keeping its apple and pear. Its water is drawn from the River Lossie, which runs past the distillery at Elgin. It closed in 1910 and reopened in 1923 under Macdonald and Muir of Glenmorangie.
At 46% it is light and soft. A fresh, fruity sweetness, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. Soft orchard fruit and a creamy vanilla sit behind the cask. A long, fruity finish carries a green apple and a soft spice. This is a Speyside single malt of real value.
