Description
This Glen Moray was bottled by A.D. Rattray, a 14 year old, distilled in 1998, from cask 3442, bottled at 56.7%, one of 275 bottles. Glen Moray is a Speyside single malt from La Martiniquaise, light and approachable in style. It has been owned since 2008 by the French house La Martiniquaise.
It was distilled from unpeated malt in copper pot stills, for the light, fruity make Glen Moray is known for. Ex-Bourbon casks held it, the gentle American oak letting the light fruit lead. In integration lactones (coconut) and vanillin (vanilla) knit with the spirit, the green apple deepening to honey and toffee. Maturation in the bonded warehouses at Elgin is slow and steady. Years in oak round the spirit, the green apple deepening to honey and dried fruit. It closed in 1910 and reopened in 1923 under Macdonald and Muir of Glenmorangie. The accessible, fruity make is the base for the distillery's many cask finishes.
At a hearty 56.7% it carries real weight. Pear, honey and a soft malt, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The texture is light and clean, the fruit lifted by vanilla. The finish runs light, fruity and clean. This is the easy, fruity malt of Elgin.
