Description
A 12 year old Glen Moray from the Glasgow bottler Douglas Laing, distilled in 2008, from cask DL 14254, bottled at 48.4%, one of 354 bottles. Glen Moray, founded in 1897 in a former brewery, is one of Speyside's best loved malts. It was founded in 1897 in the converted Elgin West Brewery, on the banks of the River Lossie.
The spirit was run through the stills on River Lossie water for a light make, for a clean make of orchard fruit and a soft honey. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, vanillin lending vanilla under the apple. By the integrating teens congeners fade and esters build, the light, fruity spirit growing rounder. Active wood frames the fruit without overwhelming the light Speyside spirit. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and coconut over the fruit. The clean, fruity spirit shows the cask clearly, vanilla and fruit to the fore.
At a natural 48.4% it is full and fruity. Apple, pear and a soft vanilla, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The mouthfeel is light, the fruit carried on a clean body. A long, fruity finish carries a green apple and a soft spice. This is a light Speyside malt from the banks of the Lossie.
