Glen Mhor 30 Years Old 1964 Cask #278/9 (Dun Eideann)

This Glen Mhor was bottled by Dun Eideann, a 30 year old, distilled in 1964, from cask 278/9, bottled at 43%, one of 880 bottles. Glen Mhor is a closed Highland distillery, its single malt now a finite, dwindling stock. After closure it was demolished, the site given over to a retail development.

It was drawn off the stills into worm tubs for the full, oily Glen Mhor make, for the full, oily make Glen Mhor was known for. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, vanilla and a light sweetness under the fruit. At a great, fragile age oxidation rules, sotolon lending maple and dried fig as beeswax and an oily richness linger. The slow loss of the angel's share concentrates the oily, waxy core over the decades. It passed to the Distillers Company in 1972 and was closed in 1983. Slow oxidation over decades draws the full spirit towards a waxy, oily richness. It was closed in the same cuts that took Glen Albyn, Brora and Banff. No new spirit will follow it, the Inverness stills cold since 1983.

At 43% it is full and waxy. A full, oily orchard fruit, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Pear, beeswax and a rich oil fill the middle. The finish is long, oily and waxy. This is a rare Highland single malt from a demolished distillery.
