Description
This Glen Mhor was bottled by the Glasgow bottler Douglas Laing, a 28 year old, distilled in 1975, from cask DL 573, bottled at 50%, one of 309 bottles. Glen Mhor was a Highland distillery in Inverness, closed in 1983 and since demolished. Its water came from Loch Ness, drawn down the River Ness to the distillery.
It was drawn off the stills into worm tubs for the full, oily Glen Mhor make, for the full, oily make Glen Mhor was known for. A refill bourbon hogshead held it, keeping the rich distillery character to the fore. At this evaporative stage ellagitannins lend a drying structure while oxidation builds a richer, oily fruit. The worm tubs are the key to Glen Mhor's body, holding the heavier, oily notes in the spirit. After closure it was demolished, the site given over to a retail development. The oily, waxy texture is a mark of well aged Glen Mhor. Closed in 1983 and demolished in 1986, its profile is fixed for good.
At a hearty 50% it carries real weight. A full, oily orchard fruit, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The mouthfeel is oily and full, the fruit carried on a waxy body. The finish runs oily, full and warming. This is Glen Mhor's full, oily old Highland style.
