Description
A Glasgow single malt, selected and bottled by Claxton's, a 6 year old Glasgow malt from 2017, drawn from cask EXP1063 and bottled at 50%. Based in Hillington in the southwest of Glasgow, The Glasgow Distillery Company has made single malt since 2015. Water comes from Loch Katrine, and the whisky is bottled without chill filtration and at natural colour.
It was distilled from Scottish barley in copper stills on Loch Katrine water, giving the bright, fruity Glasgow spirit. Ex-Sherry wood added a dried fruit richness, fast on the young spirit. The distillery treats wood as the main lever on a spirit still finding its age. Its 1770 name recalls the old Glasgow Distillery at Dundashill, founded in 1770 and closed in 1902. Makar Gin came first, in 2014, and helped fund the return of whisky to the city. The first single malt casks were filled in 2015, the first whisky released in 2018.
At a natural 50% it is bold and full. Green apple, pear and a soft vanilla lead, and the Amontillado adds a dry, nutty edge. It is fruity and bold, the spirit and oak well matched. Orchard fruit and a soft oak see out the finish. This is the 1770 single malt of Glasgow.
