Geschickt makes this orange Riesling from Wineck-Schlossberg, one of the smallest and highest grand cru sites in Alsace at around 400 metres. Twelve months in amphorae gives a youthful, light wine with white peach, citrus peel and a fine grip.
Description
Geschickt farms in Alsace, sourcing this wine from Wineck-Schlossberg, one of the region's smallest and highest grands crus at around 400 metres above sea level. The grape is Riesling, here made as an orange wine and farmed biodynamically and organically. Altitude is decisive: at 400 metres the site sees cool air and a wide day to night temperature range that lock in acidity and floral aromatics, while the granite based grand cru soils give a fine, stony backbone. Rather than the usual quick pressing, the juice is left in contact with the skins, drawing out phenolics, gentle colour and a light tannic grip while keeping Riesling's perfume. It then ages twelve months in clay amphorae, vessels that allow slow oxygen exchange and build texture without the imprint of oak. The result keeps a youthful character and lightness alongside real intensity. The colour is pale amber. The nose shows white peach, apricot and white flowers, with honey and beeswax. The palate is dry and fresh, with citrus peel and dried herbs over a fine grip and long, mineral finish. Serve at 12 to 14 degrees in a white wine glass. It pairs well with white fish and roast chicken.
