Description
Arnaud Geschickt and Aurelie Fayolle run their family domaine in Ammerschwihr, Alsace, established in the 1950s, and for the past decade have made what they call liberated and living terroir wines alongside the classic Alsatian range. Phenix is an orange wine blending Pinot Gris and the perfumed Gewurztraminer, two grapes that lend natural aroma and body. Made with skin contact, the must draws colour, light tannin and texture from the skins, turning these aromatic varieties into a dry, textured wine. Ageing for six months in stainless steel keeps the focus on primary fruit and floral aromatics rather than oxidative or oak character, so the wine stays fresh and lifted. Farming is biodynamic, natural and organic, with native yeasts. The wine is amber gold. The nose is openly aromatic, with white peach, apricot and orange zest over rose and white flowers, lifted by a gingery, spicy note from the Gewurztraminer. The palate is dry and textured, the skin contact giving gentle grip while crisp acidity carries a long, citrus-edged finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
