Description
Arnaud Geschickt and Aurelie Fayolle farm biodynamically in Ammerschwihr, Alsace, and this wine comes from the Kaefferkopf Grand Cru, one of the region's named hillside sites, blending Gewurztraminer with Pinot Gris and a little Riesling. The granitic, limestone-influenced soils of Kaefferkopf and the ripe 2018 vintage give concentrated, powerful fruit at a full fourteen percent. Made as an orange wine with extended skin contact, the must draws colour, phenolics and firm tannin from the skins, giving the amber colour and the dry, structural grip. Several years of bottle age since 2018 have allowed the aromatics to develop and the tannins to settle into a savoury, layered whole. Farming is biodynamic, natural and organic, with native yeasts. The wine is deep amber. The nose is rich and aromatic, with apricot and orange marmalade over rose, honey and a waxy, gingery spice. The palate is dry, broad and structured, the tannins firm but resolved, carrying dried herbs and a long, savoury finish. Serve at 13 to 15 degrees in a large glass.
