Gerovassiliou Malagousia is a single variety white from Epanomi in northern Greece, made from a grape Vangelis Gerovassiliou rescued from near extinction. Cold skin maceration and part barrel fermentation, then lees ageing, give a perfumed wine of peach, melon and white flowers.
Description
Gerovassiliou Malagousia is grown at Ktima Gerovassiliou near Epanomi, on the coast of Thessaloniki in northern Greece. Malagousia is an aromatic Greek variety that had almost disappeared before Vangelis Gerovassiliou revived it, and it remains closely tied to this estate. The vineyards sit on sandy coastal soils cooled by sea breezes, which lengthen ripening and protect the grape's floral aromatics and natural acidity. The winemaking is built to preserve that perfume: the fruit is given a cold maceration on its skins to draw out aroma, part of the must ferments in stainless steel at around 18 degrees to keep the fruit fresh, and the remainder ferments in French oak, after which the wine is aged on its lees for several months to add structure and body. The colour is bright straw with green tints. The nose is intense and floral, with ripe pear, white peach, melon and elderflower lifted by rose and white flowers. The palate is medium bodied and rounded, the lees giving weight against a citrus freshness that carries the finish. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees with fish, poultry or fresh vegetable dishes.
