Gerardo Méndez is a benchmark name for Albariño in the D.O. Rías Baixas, a family winery whose records reach back to 1790 in the Val do Salnés, the coolest and most maritime part of the appellation. The vineyards sit close to the Atlantic on granite and sand, where high rainfall, sea breezes and mineral soils give Albariño its firm acidity and saline signature. This is a single-variety wine made in a fresh, direct style, fermented cool to preserve the aromatics and the sense of place rather than reshaped by oak.
