Gemma Miró, a biologist and viticulturist, makes La Partió in Catalonia from Cariñena farmed naturally and organically. Unoaked and fresh, this purple-fruited red shows ripe blackberry, plum, garden herbs and a balsamic, peppery lift.
Description
Gemma Miró works the land in Catalonia that she learned from her grandfather, farming as a biologist and viticulturist with a light, natural touch. La Partió is made from Cariñena, the high-acid, late-ripening grape native to the region, grown here on the dry, herb-scented hillsides of inland Catalonia. The Mediterranean climate ripens the fruit fully while the altitude and cool nights preserve freshness, giving a vivid, juicy red of just 12 percent alcohol. The farming is natural and organic, and the wine is made without oak, so primary fruit, acidity and the garrigue character of the site come through cleanly with no wood to cover them. The colour is a bright, vibrant purple. The nose shows ripe blackberry and plum with red berries, garden herbs, thyme and a balsamic, peppery edge. The palate is light and fresh, with soft tannins, lively acidity and a clean, herb-tinged finish. This is an honest, unoaked natural red built for easy drinking and the table. Serve lightly chilled at 14 to 15 degrees, no decanting needed. It pairs with grilled pork, roast chicken and tomato-based dishes.
