Gazur is a young Ribera del Duero red from Telmo Rodríguez, made from organically farmed Tinto Fino across several plots. Fermented with native yeasts and rested briefly in concrete, it is fresh and fruit-driven, with bright red and black fruit.
Description
Gazur is the young red from Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez, drawn from Tinto Fino, the Ribera del Duero name for Tempranillo, across several plots in Burgos farmed on organic principles. The clusters are pre-selected in the vineyard, and on arrival at the cellar the grapes ferment with native yeasts, the wild population carried on the fruit and the cellar, which gives a more savoury and site-specific character than cultured strains. The wine then rests just six months in concrete vats rather than oak. Concrete is inert and neutral, so it shapes the wine through micro-oxygenation and a slight cooling effect while leaving the fruit untouched by wood, which keeps Gazur fresh and direct. Ribera del Duero's continental climate and wide day to night temperature swing give the grapes deep colour and ripe tannin in the day and lock in acidity at night, the balance that makes a young wine like this lively rather than heavy. The colour is bright and deep. The nose is fresh, with red and black cherry, plum and a floral lift. The palate is medium-bodied and juicy, the tannins soft and the acidity bright, finishing clean and fruit-driven. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, lightly cooled. It is an easy match for everyday meals.
