Garnacha de Fuego is a varietal Garnacha from Bodegas Breca in DO Calatayud, Aragon, a project led by Jorge Ordonez with winemakers Sarah Morris and Iwo Jakimowicz. The fruit comes from very old vines grown on hillsides around 900 metres above sea level. At that altitude the days are warm enough to ripen Garnacha fully while cold nights preserve acidity and aromatic freshness, the diurnal swing that gives the wine its balance of ripeness and lift. The grapes ferment in stainless steel with a ten day maceration at 25 degrees, then complete malolactic fermentation in tank, which converts sharper malic acid into softer lactic acid and rounds the texture. There is no oak ageing, so the wine stays fruit driven and direct. The 2021 shows an intense cherry red, with ripe cherry, blackberry and red berry fruit over black pepper, liquorice and a hint of dried herbs from the high, dry country. The palate is full and warm at 14.5 percent, generous and supple with a long, slightly spicy finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees. A natural match for grilled meats, roasts and stews.
