A 38 year Gardel relic from Guadeloupe at 46.6%, a single cask molasses rum with a magnetic nose of dark fruit, leather, tobacco and cola giving way to an ultra dry, tannic, oak soaked palate, more history than comfort.
Description
Bottled by Spirit of Rum for the Rumclub Private Selection, this is a 38 year old single cask from Gardel, a Guadeloupe distillery, drawn from a 1983 vintage and bottled unsweetened at 46.6%. Despite the agricole island, the base here is molasses and the spirit was distilled on a column still, then left for decades in ex bourbon oak.
The nose is the showpiece, an extraordinary tangle of dark fruit, tobacco, leather and cola over tea, menthol and very old wood. The palate goes the other way, ultra dry, bitter and tannic, the oak dominating after so long in cask. This reads as liquid history rather than a comfortable everyday sipper, a divisive, fascinating glass that asks for patience, plenty of aeration and a focused tasting setting rather than casual pouring.
