Description
Gabin et Felix Richoux Irancy 2018 is a Pinot Noir from Irancy in northern Burgundy, where the Richoux family farms organically and biodynamically and holds wines back, releasing only the vintages it judges ready. Irancy's vineyards form an amphitheatre around the village on limestone and clay soils; with the cool, semi-continental climate this gives Pinot Noir bright acidity and a savoury, earthy profile rather than overt fruit sweetness. The wine was raised for 24 months, 12 in concrete tanks that hold fruit and freshness and 12 in oak barrels that soften tannins through gentle oxygen exchange. The 2018 was a warm, generous vintage, which fleshes out the mid-palate. The colour is cherry red with a medium to low intensity typical of the appellation. The nose is intense, showing cherry, red berries and redcurrant over earth and dried herbs. The palate is balanced and savoury, with fine tannins, fresh acidity and a finish that turns to leather and smoke with air. It is drinking well now and will keep for a few years. Serve at 16C. It pairs naturally with roast poultry, duck and mushroom dishes.
