Description
Gaba do Xil O Barreiro is a Godello from D.O. Valdeorras in Galicia, made by Telmo Rodríguez from a single site in the eastern, more continental corner of the region. Valdeorras sits on slate and granite soils, and the poor, well-drained ground combined with warm days and cool nights ripens Godello fully while keeping its acidity intact, giving the grape its balance of stone fruit and freshness. The wine is aged for four months on its fine lees, and this lees contact, through the slow breakdown of spent yeast cells, adds body, a subtle savoury depth and a rounder, creamier texture without any oak. It is bright golden. The nose is green apple and white peach with pear, white flowers and a light almond note. The palate is dry and textured, medium bodied, with ripe orchard and stone fruit, a saline mineral streak and a fresh, persistent finish. Serve lightly chilled at around 9 to 11 degrees in a white glass. Its weight and freshness suit richer fish and roast poultry.
