Fulcro Pescuda Blanco is a barrel-aged Albariño from Manuel Moldes in the Salnés valley of Rías Baixas. Grown on sandy granite soils overlooking the sea and aged in used French oak, it is a saline, textured white of white peach, pear and citrus.
Description
Pescuda Blanco comes from Bodegas Fulcro, the project of Manuel Moldes in the Salnés subzone of the D.O. Rías Baixas, at Sanxenxo in Pontevedra. The grape is Albariño, grown on sandy granitic soils on vineyards overlooking the Atlantic. Salnés is the coolest and most maritime part of Rías Baixas, with high rainfall and constant sea air, and the free-draining sandy granite gives wines with sharp acidity, a clear mineral line and a marked salinity. Moldes farms organically, with maximum respect for the grape and minimal technology in the cellar. This wine is aged for five months in used French oak barrels. Because the barrels are old rather than new, they add little wood flavour and instead act as a neutral vessel that allows slow oxygen exchange and lees contact, building texture and breadth while keeping the Albariño's fresh, saline character intact. The colour is pale straw. The nose shows ripe white peach and pear with white flowers and a clear citrus lift. The palate is broad and textured, with a subtle creaminess and just a hint of vanilla framing a firm, salty, mineral finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees. It is a fine partner for shellfish, grilled fish and light poultry.
