Description
Fulcro Aliaxe is a red from the DO Rías Baixas in Galicia, a region better known for white Albariño, made by Manuel Moldes under his Fulcro label. It is a blend of the local Caíño Tinto, Espadeiro and Loureiro, varieties that define the Atlantic reds of Galicia and give wines unlike the standard Rías Baixas style. The cool, wet Atlantic climate is the key here, holding alcohol to 11.5 percent and keeping acidity high, while these grapes ripen with bright red fruit, floral aromatics and a savoury, herbal edge. Caíño brings structure and tannin, Espadeiro lifts the fruit, and Loureiro adds perfume. The wine ages 14 months in used French oak, the older barrels giving gentle oxygenation and rounding the firm acidity without adding heavy wood. The colour is bright, light ruby. The nose is lively and aromatic, with red berries, red currant, geranium and fresh herbs over a leafy, savoury note. The palate is light and fresh, the high acidity giving energy and the tannins a fine grip, finishing on red fruit, pepper and earth. Serve lightly chilled at 14 to 15 degrees. Good with grilled pork and oily fish.
