Las Jaras comes from old Mencia, Alicante Bouschet and Garnacha vines on iron-rich clay near the Jamuz River in Leon. Made by Marta Ramas with Raul Perez and aged nine months in foudres, it shows dark berries, violet and an earthy, mineral grip.
Description
Fuentes del Silencio is a young project on the banks of the Jamuz River in the Leon village of Herreros del Jamuz, run by winemaker Marta Ramas with guidance from Raul Perez. The work is built around old native vines and gentle, integrated viticulture that revives the area's traditional varieties. Las Jaras blends Mencia with Alicante Bouschet and Garnacha from old vines on clay soils high in iron content, ground that gives the wine its dark fruit, savoury depth and firm mineral grip. The continental climate of this corner of Castilla y Leon, with warm days and cool nights, lets the fruit ripen while holding acidity and freshness. The wine is aged for nine months in foudres, large old oak vessels that allow slow oxygen exchange to soften the tannins without adding obvious oak flavour. The colour is deep ruby. The nose offers blackberry and dark cherry, violet, dried herbs and a stony, ferrous note. The palate is medium to full bodied, with bright acidity, fine but firm tannins and a savoury, mineral finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees. It suits roast lamb, beef and earthy mushroom dishes.
