Fuentenebro is a Ribera del Duero Tempranillo from Bodegas Señorío de Nava, grown on old vines above 900 metres between Soria and Burgos. Eleven months in oak give tart red currant, wild strawberry and plum over a firm, fresh structure.
Description
Fuentenebro comes from Bodegas Señorío de Nava in D.O. Ribera del Duero, on the high plateau of Castilla y León. The fruit is Tempranillo from old vineyards spread between Soria and Burgos at over 900 metres of altitude, where the climate is extreme and the elevation forces the grape to refine slowly without losing its freshness. At that height the cold nights and warm days create a wide diurnal range that holds acidity and builds colour and tannin in the skins through a long, late ripening. The wine spends eleven months in oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange through the wood rounds the firm Tempranillo tannins and adds vanilla and a light spice. The colour is deep cherry red. The nose leads with fresh wild berries, currants and tart strawberry, with plum, liquorice and an earthy, oak-touched depth. The palate is structured and fresh, the altitude showing in its bright acidity, with firm tannin and a savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanted if young. It suits roast lamb, grilled beef and mushroom dishes.
