Fernando Mora makes Psicodélico at Bodegas Frontonio in Aragón from a field blend of local red and white varieties. Ancestral methods and twelve months in barrel give a light, perfumed red at 12.5 percent, fresh and aromatic.
Description
Frontonio Psicodélico is an organic red from Aragón made by Fernando Mora at Bodegas Frontonio, working the triangle of Campo de Borja, Cariñena and Calatayud. Mora seeks the fullest expression of local varieties through ancestral winemaking, and this wine is a field blend of red and white grapes co-fermented in the traditional way. Co-fermenting red and white fruit together, a long-standing practice in old Iberian vineyards, lifts the aromatics and lightens the structure, which is why this wine sits at a modest 12.5 percent alcohol with a perfumed, gentle profile. The old bush vines of Aragón grow on poor stony soils at altitude, where cool nights hold acidity and keep the fruit fresh. The wine ages twelve months in barrel, used wood that adds texture and a savoury edge without heavy oak flavour. The colour is bright and translucent. The nose is floral and red-fruited, with cherry, redcurrant, white flowers and an earthy, peppery lift. The palate is light and fresh, with soft tannin, lively acidity and an aromatic finish. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, lightly cool. It suits roast chicken, charcuterie and mushroom dishes, and can stand in for a white.
